You get crafting item loot for finishing levels, which can be used to make costumes that give you buffs. Each player picks one, and uses it for the rest of the level. Each level contains 3 items, sometimes the same, sometimes different. You go online for a particular world, and then choose where you play by a vote.
After beating the boss, there are additionally 3 challenges to complete for each level. The game works by choosing a world, and then one of the 4 levels for that world. I only do single player if there's some item I need and don't want to fight over the chosen stage. While possible to play single player, it is far more dull than playing with even random strangers online.
